Mummification

Mummification

Mummification is a form of bondage that involves wrapping the body in material for complete or near-complete immobilization. Unlike rope or cuff-based restraint, mummification removes nearly all movement at once. The wrapped person cannot shift, squirm, or adjust position. This total restriction of movement is the core of the practice.

Materials

The most common material is plastic wrap (cling film) because it is cheap, accessible, and conforms tightly to the body. Self-adhesive bandages offer a similar effect with less heat buildup. Duct tape is sometimes used over a protective base layer like plastic wrap or fabric to prevent skin contact with adhesive. For more purpose-built options, leather and neoprene sleepsacks zip or lace around the body and are reusable. Latex sheeting provides a tight, second-skin feel but requires powder or lubricant to prevent tearing.

Psychology

Mummification creates a sense of total helplessness and surrender. The wrapped person has no ability to resist, move away, or protect themselves. For many, this complete loss of control produces a deep headspace similar to sensory deprivation. The experience can feel cocoon-like and meditative, or intensely vulnerable, depending on the person and the dynamic. Some practitioners combine mummification with blindfolds or earplugs to deepen the effect.

Safety

Mummification is considered an edge play activity. The primary danger is overheating. Wrapping materials trap body heat and block the skin from sweating, which can cause core temperature to rise dangerously in minutes, particularly with plastic wrap. Never cover the nose and mouth. Never leave a mummified person unattended. Have EMT shears within arm's reach at all times so the wrap can be cut away immediately in an emergency.

Monitor breathing, skin color, and responsiveness throughout the session. Agree on a non-verbal safeword before starting since verbal communication may be difficult. Keep sessions short and have water ready for afterward. For a full walkthrough of techniques and risk management, see our mummification activity guide.
