Electro Play

Electro Play

Electro play is a form of sensation play that uses controlled electrical stimulation on the body. The sensations range from gentle tingling and warmth to sharp zaps and involuntary muscle contractions, depending on the device, the settings, and where the current is applied. Because it involves electricity and the human body, electro play is classified as edge play.

Common Devices

Violet wands are the most recognizable electro play tool. They use a Tesla coil to generate a high-frequency, low-current electrical arc that jumps from a glass electrode to the skin. The sensation is a sharp, crackling sting that intensifies when the electrode is held close to the skin without touching. Different glass attachments change the sensation and coverage area.

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) units were designed for physical therapy but are widely used in BDSM. They deliver rhythmic electrical pulses through adhesive pads placed on the skin, causing muscles to contract and release. Intensity, pulse frequency, and pulse width are adjustable, making TENS units versatile for beginners and experienced players.

Purpose-built erotic e-stim devices like the ErosTek or PES Power Box offer more control and a wider range of sensations than repurposed medical equipment. These units often come with specialized conductive accessories.

Safety and Contraindications

Electro play has non-negotiable safety rules. Never apply electrical stimulation across the chest or heart area. Current passing through the heart can cause arrhythmia or cardiac arrest. Keep all electrodes and contacts below the waist or on extremities. Never use electro play on the head or neck.

People with pacemakers, implanted defibrillators, or other electrical medical devices must not participate in electro play under any circumstances. The same applies to people with epilepsy or serious heart conditions. Never use electro play near water or on broken skin.

Start at the lowest setting and increase gradually. See our electro play activity guide for device-specific instructions, pad placement diagrams, and scene planning tips.
